ECOSYSTEM GUIDE · UPDATED 2026
What is the difference between Drupal, Acquia, Pantheon and Amazee?
Drupal is an open source project governed by a non-profit organization. Acquia, Pantheon and Amazee are private companies that built commercial products on top of Drupal. They are distinct actors in the same ecosystem — understanding the difference is key before deciding how to manage your digital platform.

How the Drupal ecosystem is organized
The Drupal ecosystem has three layers: the open source foundation managed by Drupal Association, the commercial platforms that build on top of Drupal, and the certified partners that implement and support projects. Each actor plays a distinct role.

LAYER 1 · THE FOUNDATION
Drupal.org · Drupal Association
Open source project · No private owner · Any company can build on top of it · Certifies official partners · Governs the code independently
LAYER 2 · COMMERCIAL PLATFORMS
Private companies that build proprietary products on top of Drupal. For custom development, they rely on their network of certified partners.

Frequently asked questions about the Drupal ecosystem
The most common questions we get about Drupal, Acquia, certifications and how to choose the right infrastructure.
No. Drupal is an open source project governed by Drupal Association, a non-profit organization. Acquia is a private company founded in 2007 that built commercial products —hosting, no-code tools and marketing cloud— on top of Drupal. Using Drupal does not require contracting Acquia. They are distinct actors in the same ecosystem.
A Drupal Diamond Partner is an agency certified by Drupal Association at the second-highest level of the official partner program on Drupal.org. To obtain it, the agency must demonstrate verified technical contributions to Drupal core, audited projects and active participation in the global community. For a company, hiring a Diamond Partner guarantees the highest level of technical expertise available in the region. Seed EM is the only Drupal Diamond Partner in all of Latin America.
All three are commercial platforms built on Drupal open source, but with different approaches. Acquia offers managed hosting plus proprietary no-code tools like page builder and marketing cloud. Pantheon is a WebOps platform with highly optimized dev/stage/prod workflows. Amazee.io is managed cloud hosting based on Kubernetes, focused on agencies and complex projects. All three depend on certified partners for custom development.
No. Enterprise Drupal is a capability of the open source platform, not an exclusive Acquia product. Any agency with the appropriate Drupal Association certification can implement enterprise Drupal. Seed EM, as a Diamond Certified Partner, implements enterprise Drupal on its own SeedCloud infrastructure or on Acquia, depending on what the client needs.
Yes. Seed EM has Acquia-certified developers and can implement, migrate, optimize and support projects already running on the Acquia platform. It is not necessary to migrate infrastructure to work with Seed EM.
Pure Drupal offers total technological sovereignty: the code is entirely yours, you pay no additional licenses, you can change hosting or partner without losing your investment, and you have no dependency on a private company. The trade-off is that you need a solid technical partner for development and maintenance. Acquia adds no-code tools that reduce technical dependence, but in exchange for a license and a certain level of lock-in.
SeedCloud is Seed EM's own cloud infrastructure, built on AWS and optimized exclusively for Drupal. It offers 99.9% SLA, 24/7 technical support in Spanish, managed security and auto-scaling. Unlike Acquia, SeedCloud adds no proprietary layers: the client retains total sovereignty over their code. It is the regional option for companies in Colombia and LATAM that want enterprise infrastructure without paying additional licenses.

You can verify the certification level of any agency in the world. Seed EM's profile is available at drupal.org/seed-em.
Yes. Drupal is the open source platform preferred by governments, universities, media and large companies worldwide for its robustness, security and scalability. In LATAM, Seed EM has implemented Drupal for clients such as UNESCO, Grupo Éxito, Tigo UNE and Politécnico Grancolombiano, among others. The key is to work with a partner with the right level of certification.
It means technological sovereignty: your company owns its digital platform. No one can take away access to your code, unilaterally raise license prices or force you to change provider. You can change hosting, agency or partner without losing your investment. The code is yours. This is a fundamental difference compared to proprietary platforms like Adobe Experience Manager or Sitecore.
All of this information is publicly verifiable
Drupal partner certifications are managed directly by Drupal Association at drupal.org/drupal-services. The information is public, updated in real time and not controlled by any vendor or agency. Any company can verify the certification level of any partner before hiring them.
