As is tradition at every DrupalCon, Dries Buytaert, creator of the Drupal project, has made a presentation to the community on topics that are of great importance to the community, communicating the vision of the project, past, present and future.

At the recent DrupalCon North America 2023 in Pittsburgh, more than 1,500 Drupal enthusiasts gathered to explore new ideas, share knowledge, and strengthen the community. As CEO of Seed EM, I had the privilege of attending and want to share with you some notable thoughts on the innovation and impact of this event on the Drupal community.

Drupal 9 is the materialization of what the community has been working on throughout Drupal 8 over all these years, a version that means the complete adoption of the model of continuous innovation and regular update cycles that have allowed that for the first time in the existence of the project, a major update does not imply a reconstruction and migration.

At SeeD we had been seduced by this new version and therefore took on the task of migrating our previous site from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8, taking advantage of a new and clean design. This is great news for the Drupal community, Google has accepted 20 Drupal projects for the 2011 Google Summer of Code, representing an investment of $110,000 US by Google for these projects.

In preparation for the new major release, Drupal 10.0.x and Drupal 9.5.x will enter beta the week of September 12, 2022.

In Drupal 10, the Classy theme has been replaced by the new Starterkit theme builder. The Starterkit theme builder is now the recommended way to create new themes, rather than setting a theme's base theme - a core theme such as Classy. Note that this is specific to creating new themes, and there are no automated tools to convert existing themes to take advantage of Starterkit.
