The journey of quality

El viaje de la calidad

A metaphor for quality in web development.

In our daily life, rich in User Stories, Epics and Milestones, we face the odyssey of quality as a team. We will address this reflection through a narrative that covers the conceptual and the practical.

Understanding quality involves immersing yourself in an ocean of important concepts and valuable tools that allow us to guarantee compliance with requirements and satisfaction of various expectations. For now, let's sail as a crew over the sea of quality in web development towards the great continent of excellence with the wind in our sails of the agile  Scrum methodology .

As in any well-planned trip, the first thing is to set our destination on the horizon (Project Vision). We must define the course, calculate supplies (User Stories) and calibrate the navigation tools (Sprint planning and release plan). The route outlined must contemplate the best possible experiences for our passengers (Users and Stakeholders) and diligently attend to the protocols (Prioritized Backlog) to launch our ship and push the progress of each mile (Sprint). The rudder must be firmly directed from the planning of the project to avoid the whirlpools of uncertainty and reorient our vessel towards the destination, avoiding the storm of chaos at all costs (Improvisation).

The journey must be safe, pleasant and effective (Quality), for this we must keep the engine well synchronized (Daily Standup), update protocols, schedule inspections and constant maintenance (commitment of the Scrum and QA team).

The crew (Scrum Team) must be trained and updated, in their luggage they must carry what is necessary for each journey and acquire the best tools. With good planning and operation, the trip should be as passengers and crew expect, pleasant.

-The philosophical note-

Each team member must do a frequent exercise of introspection and conclude if they are giving their best at all times to serve the team and passengers (users and Stakeholders) through their work. The crew will also do this exercise at the end of each mile and journey (Sprint and Project Retrospective).

Sightings from this tour:

  • The sky will not always be clear or the sea calm, but a trained and united crew will overcome any swell.
  • The journey never ends! I invite you to enjoy each journey, with focus and sustained effort we will achieve excellence, but we must always return to the ocean of quality to improve our ship with each journey and evolve into a high-performance team.
  • Immersed in the waters of this sea are true treasures for the ship that await discovery by the crew and why not? They could be explored on other routes. Just to mention a few gems within the treasure of quality: Design Thinking, Usability, Performance, Effectiveness, Business Objectives, Scalability.
  • We are surrounded by quality throughout the entire process and the success of the trip depends on the commitment of the entire team.

I hope this tour has been to your liking.

Until next time!
