The long awaited arrival of Drupal 9 finally saw the light of day. On June 3rd the Drupal community around the world celebrated the release of this powerful new version. This marks an important milestone in the evolution of Drupal from a conventional CMS and development framework to a true digital experience manager. The migration from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 will not be as complex as the previous migrations between hard versions 6 to 7 and 7 to 8. From Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 will be something more like an upgrade but taking into account many more aspects such as, for example, that it will be mandatory to get rid of obsolete code.

Both Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 are not scheduled to go into obsolescence until November 2021, but this is the time to start planning a migration and understand what that will entail and one of those aspects is to keep in mind that for a robust site or set of sites that are on Drupal 7, it is important to anticipate at least 6 months of planning, design and development. The main attribute for 9 is its compatibility with version 8 from day one. This means that all your Drupal 8 components will continue to work with this new version. If any of your site's key features depend on modules, you can breathe easy and upgrade to Drupal 9 when the release arrives. In addition, Drupal 9 will include support for more up-to-date PHP libraries, including the latest versions of Twig and Symfony.
